Representative Bob McDermott issued a press release on October 20, 2015 with a supplemental report on actual content of DOE sanctioned sexuality education now being pushed in Hawaii schools to children as young as 11 and 12.
Of the six available options for teaching sex education to middle school students, McDermott finds only one acceptable.
Honolulu – August 13, 2015 – Today Representative Bob McDermott (HD40 Ewa Beach) released his McDermott Report #4 on controversial sex education materials in use today in Hawaii’s public middle schools.
McDermott’s staff reviewed course materials for six different programs including HealthTeacher, Making a Difference!, Draw the Line, Respect the Line, and Family Life and Sexual Health (F.L.A.S.H.). Pono Choices, which is actually not an approved curricula, but a “research” project was covered extensively in previous reports.
McDermott also underscored the fact that the Department of Education keeps no records of which programs are used in which schools.
“That’s why we’re providing this report as a guide for parents to evaluate various sex ed curriculums,” said McDermott. “The parents really have to keep track of what materials are being put in front of their children, because the D.O.E. doesn’t seem to know.”
Health Teacher, the one sex ed course that McDermott found acceptable was written in 1999 and is the oldest.
“It’s no coincidence that the older program is free from most of the ‘political correctness’ and social engineering that creeps into later versions,” added McDermott. “Some of the courses contain outright endorsements of the LGBT lifestyle. We have moved beyond tolerance and into forced affirmation.”
McDermott also cited specific medical inaccuracies and the deliberate misrepresentation of the actual risks of aberrant sexual behaviors.
He also pointed out what he called a deliberate attempt to undermine the parent/child relationship.
“We see many examples where the D.O.E. tries, through some of these programs, to usurp the parents authority on moral issues, thereby creating a cultural conflict in the home,” said McDermott. They try to offset what the parents are trying to impart to their own children and that is just plain wrong.”

Representative Bob McDermott has formally requested that Governor Ige task the Attorney General with investigating any role Planned Parenthood of Hawaii may have in the sale of aborted baby body parts. If there is any local activity associated with this deplorable practice, that Planned Parenthood of Hawaii be immediately de-funded by the State. Read the complete letter by clicking below:
McDermott has also requested that any Planned Parenthood involvement in our public school system regarding the development of “sexual” education curriculum be halted.
Planned Parenthood is still reeling from the release of a video tape that exposed the fact that they were harvesting and selling organs from aborted infants. This has also renewed opposition to attempts by Planned Parenthood to invade public schools with their brand of compulsory “sex education.” Representative Bob McDermott had a strong response to the recent disclosures surrounding Planned Parenthood and their fitness to become our children’s source of information regarding sexual health and morality.
State Rep. Bob McDermott of Hawaii, an aggressive opponent of Planned Parenthood, did not mince words about the new revelations.
He has long accused Planned Parenthood and other providers of “comprehensive” sex education of purposefully giving students medically inaccurate or incomplete information, in an effort to promote their political and financial agendas.
“Planned Parenthood is an organization with racist roots in their founder Margaret Sanger,” McDermott said. “They continue to target poor minorities – to wit, more black babies were aborted in New York City than born last year.
“They are anti-Catholic religious bigots who engage in ridicule of that faith on a routine basis, they promote immoral behavior and promiscuity among our young people, they are despicable sex-hustlers who’s very actions victimize young girls.
“They claim to be providers of reproductive health care. I’m not sure how the little babies whose parts are being sold would feel about that statement. To Planned Parenthood, this was a business decision. Instead of throwing the baby parts in the trash as normal, they chose to make a buck!
“Planned Parenthood is simply an evil organization driven by greed, sex, and immorality. It is utterly without value. Nothing surprises me when it comes to an organization whose main purpose is killing the unborn.”
Rep. McDermott calls the latest policy decisions by Hawaii’s Board of Education to force Planned Parenthood style sex ed on Hawaii’s students a travesty. The BOE has taken the position that the controversial sex ed programs in public schools should revert to the automatic enrollment, opt-out model. The actual curriculum being pushed will be along the lines of what McDermott calls “sexuality education.”
“Opt-out is a bad thing, because parents should be in charge of what their children are exposed to in our schools, it diminishes parental control and involvement,” said McDermott. “This new ‘comprehensive’ approach remains medically inaccurate and continues to push social engineering over the health and safety of our children. These programs treat anal sex as a healthy, wholesome, moral equivalent of male/female reproduction.”
McDermott thinks that the liberal agenda and focus on lifestyles over health concerns where a concession to the outgoing Abercrombie appointees on the board.
“They continue to push the Planned Parenthood agenda even as they are going out the door.” Said McDermott. “They aren’t interested in strategic risk-avoidance programs that delay sexual activity and have been shown to work.”
Recently reduced rates of abortions in Hawaii were claimed as an indication of success by Planned Parenthood based “sexuality” programs, but statistics show that it might have more to do with the delay of sexual activity in teens, a factor that is contrary with Planned Parenthoods messaging. In 1993 44.3 percent of Hawaii high school students ever had sex; but by 2013, the rate had dropped to 35.9 percent; a full 10% under the national average.
“This was accomplished under the old DOE policy of ‘abstinence-based’ sex ed that they now want to get rid of,” continued McDermott. “By encouraging sexual experimentation, at younger and younger ages, under the guise of teaching “sexuality education,” we are going in the wrong direction.”
Abstinence-based and abstinence-only programs have also worked elsewhere and statistics show that the delay of sexual activity is not only the best way to achieve fewer pregnancies and prevent STD transmission; but also leads to longer lasting and more stable marriages and higher income levels.
According to a Zogby International Poll, parents overwhelmingly support abstinence education as historically funded by Congress by a margin of 2 to 1. In fact, “9 out of 10 parents agree that being sexually abstinent is best for their child’s health and future.” A Rasmussen Report says that 80% of adults still say that parents should be teaching their children about sex.
“Parents want their children to delay, delay, delay [sexual activity], ideally until marriage.” Says McDermott.
“in spite of evidence to the contrary, and the overwhelming objection from parents, certain ‘progressive’ individuals in our system think they know better,” concluded McDermott. “The bottom line is they think they can do a better job of raising your children than you can, so you should just submit to their social engineering.”
